Based as we are in Alaska’s Wrangell Mountains, surrounded by glaciers and proximal to the largest non-polar icefield in the world, a circumpolar ethos inflects our reading even as we court, welcome, and seek readers and contributing authors from all over the country and beyond. We may well be the most remote publishing house in the country. Our commitment, though, is to an ever-broadening whole community that Alaska is privy to and part of not from the fringes, not from terra incognita, but from the center of many crossing roads and airways that together map home as a point of interrelation.

Having debuted Porphyry Press with a literary history and a memoir in essays, we anticipate developing a catalog that also includes poetry, lyric essay collections, novels, hybrids, and more. We work to find books by diverse authors—books by women, BIPOC thinkers, and other marginalized voices. We’ll collaborate with partners as we go to serve readers and audiences with experiences and conversations that broaden the scope of any individual book. And we’ll continue to tap two increasingly precious resources abundant here that author Sherry Simpson saw as characteristic of Alaska’s “literary refugium”—solitude and community.
